Summary

Martin Lings’ biography of Muhammad is an internationally acclaimed, comprehensive, and authoritative account of the life of the prophet。 Based on the sira, the eighth- and ninth-century Arabic biographies that recount numerous events in the prophet’s life, it contains original English translations of many important passages that reveal the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life。

Scrupulous and exhaustive in its fidelity to its sources, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is presented in a narrative style that is easily comprehensible, yet authentic and inspiring in its use of language, reflecting both the simplicity and grandeur of the story it tells。 This revised edition includes new sections detailing the prophet’s expanding influence and his spreading of the message of Islam into Syria and its neighboring states。 It represents the final updates made to the text before the author’s death in 2005。 The book has been published in 12 languages and has received numerous awards, including acknowledgment as best biography of the prophet in English at the National Seerate Conference in Islamabad。

One of the most satisfying feelings in the world is finally finishing a book that hasn't necessarily ingratiated itself to you。 This was that book。First, some positivity: Martin Lings did a spectacular job compiling centuries of Islamic tradition chronologically, a lot of it, if not most, being from the Hadith。 This book is masterfully done in this regard, and if this were the only thing I was rating it on, it would receive 5 stars。 Now, let's get to the "good" hashtag bad part: It's 1983 for cr One of the most satisfying feelings in the world is finally finishing a book that hasn't necessarily ingratiated itself to you。 This was that book。First, some positivity: Martin Lings did a spectacular job compiling centuries of Islamic tradition chronologically, a lot of it, if not most, being from the Hadith。 This book is masterfully done in this regard, and if this were the only thing I was rating it on, it would receive 5 stars。 Now, let's get to the "good" hashtag bad part: It's 1983 for crying out loud, why are we using King James English for the manifold quotations? Readability does happen to hinge upon the era of composure, so why translate like you're from the 19th century? "Because it has that 'holy smell' to it。" Astaghfur'allah lol。 Honestly readability is my main qualm with it。 I have no doubt that if I were an Arab reading this tho, I would definitely feel the "deeper essence" of the work stick with me。 I'm also a big facts guy。 The fact that few of the events or claims made in this book are actually backed up historically also created a slight wall。 I just wish there was more historically reliable information! Maybe I will feel better if I see this not as *the* biography of PBUH, but as *Islam's* biography of PBUH。 So, I have resolved to call this a complex, revisionist history。 It is only appropriate。 That is all, my mini rant :) 。。。more

Audiobook。 Although lacking detail especially in regards to pre-Hijrah seerah, what it lacks in detail it makes up in narrative arc and beautiful storytelling。

attention to study Islam more meticulously, which meant by extension, carefully studying the life of the Prophet ﷺ。 I have been well exposed to the Seerah literature since early childhood and have a general understanding of the prophet’s ﷺ life。 However now at a discernible age I felt a responsibility to cover the Seerah more personally while giving studious attention to important details。Among the well-known Seerah collections that are on my to-read list, this book happened to be the first read, mostly because of its renown and acclaim, both by scholars and readers。 It is an excellent compilation of events narrated from the earliest sources (as titled), carefully put together in a chronological manner concisely and coherently。 The narration style is very simple and easy to follow。 The tone is direct and unwaveringly unsentimental, giving much credit to it as an objective biographical piece。 Much more is to be said about the book’s credibility, which has been been much talked about countless times。 So I won’t reiterate all the due praise that the readers are accustomed to。 I will instead move on to the lesser addressed matters of the book, things that need to be brought up。 This book despite being an excellent work of erudite scholarship is not devoid of certain errors and of some dire need for improvements。 I will explain。 The book gives a bird’s eye view of the happening of events from the prophet’s ‎ﷺ birth to his burial and succession。 While this gives an authentic and unbiased flavour to the narration, it also compels the narrator to exclude certain narrations and events that reflect the prophet’s ﷺ character and behaviour in a more inclusive and empathetic manner。 Of course Dr。 Lings (may Allah bless his soul with peace) has narrated events that reflect the prophet’s characteristics, an example being his telling of his ﷺ unfaltering characteristic of showing mercy even to the most vilest of enemies from the start of his persecution to his days of unequivocal power。 However the tone and context of narrating these events, owing to the unsentimental approach, many times obviates the possibility of recognising the uniqueness of such outstanding personality by the reader as it humanly requires, for it was these sifāt (characteristics) of the prophet ﷺ in perfect balance with his Jalāli (majestic) sifāt that made him befitting of the title ‘The Best of All Creation’ ﷺ。There is also a major theological error in the book which was pointed out Shaykh Hamza Yusuf in his Seerah lecture series。 In the 23rd chapter of the book Dr。 Lings makes the assertion that Jesus عليه السلام was the “word-made-flesh” and “analogously… (Qur’an is) Word-made-book”。 This doesn’t fall in line with the muslim theology in any way and I felt it should be mentioned。The third important issue is that Dr。 Lings at times, with all due respect, doesn’t bother enough to open it to us that some important events have varying accounts (even among the earliest sources) and at few instances he presents the usually less accepted account as the default one, or combines different accounts to create an amalgam of varying accounts。 While he as a qualified academic is in his rights to interpret the varying accounts as he deems fit but in this process he leaves out what is understood by the broad spectrum of muslim scholars historically, which in my opinion, he ought to have at least mentioned。 This issue is especially concerning because it pertains with many events that now are popularised under an attempt to vilify the prophet’s ﷺ character。 One example of it being the Prophet's marriage to Zainab, the former wife of his adopted son Zayd Ibn Harithah。 I will not get into the details about the varying accounts and about other ’controversial’ issues but you can check the attached article from Yaqeen Institute regarding the first issue of marriage of the Prophet ﷺ with Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her)。 Same is the case with many of the important events that have been mentioned without proper prudence, devoid of necessary clarification for the reader's understanding to avoid shubha (obscurity)。Apart from these minor (excluding the major one), yet still concerning discrepancies, there are things that the reader still needs to keep in mind while going through this book。 For example, I found very little emphasis on the Prophet’s ﷺ love for his family and its significance for the muslims, especially of the ‘people of the cloak’ as mentioned in the book。 There were other things of great importance which I found missing from the book, things that I have been traditionally taught by my teachers。 However I suspend any conclusive remark about it and still give my due respect to Dr。 Lings for this excellent biography of the Prophet ﷺ which I benefited from immensely。To conclude, this book is one the best biographies of the Prophet ﷺ written in English language but not without its defects。 The reader needs to be conscious of the infallibility of any book written by man and consult the people of knowledge about any topic while personally investigating matters (as the Qur’an commands 16:43 & 9:122)。 Anyone who’s interested in learning the prophet’s ﷺ life should consult the scholars of the said field。 I would recommend the Seerah lecture series by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf。 I have also heard positively about Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah lecture series, although I haven’t personally consulted it yet。 Both are freely available on Youtube。 Among the other Seerah compilations that I intend to read next are from the following authors: Mohammad Jebara, Adil Salahi and a translated one, originally written by Muhammad bin Alawi al Maliki。 https://yaqeeninstitute。org/amp/read/。。。 。。。more
